Rodmell is a pretty downland village situated four miles south of the historic town of Lewes. It’s famous for being the home of Virginia and Leonard Woolf who achieved new found fame in the Bafta award winning film “The Hours”. Their home in Rodmell, Monks House, which also featured in the film, is now a National Trust property and and is open to the public from April to October from Wednesday to Sunday. Being so close to the South Downs Way, it’s an obvious stopping off point with an excellent pub, although accommodation options are quite limited.
About a mile from Rodmell in the beautiful Ouse Valley is the tiny village of Southease. It boasts a rich history, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book, whilst the village church is more than 1,000 years old.
Getting Here & Home Again
By Train & Bus
Southease has a railway station with hourly services to nearby Lewes and Brighton. Lewes railway station is four miles away, with direct trains to London Victoria (1 hour 10 minutes) and to Eastbourne (20 minutes). There are regular bus services to Lewes & Newhaven.
By Car
Rodmell and Southease are situated just a few miles from the A27 which runs parallel with the coast from Eastbourne to Portsmouth and gives easy access to the A23 heading north to the M25 and London. There is limited on street parking in both villages.

There is a village pub in Rodmell while the closest banks, shops and other amenities are in Lewes, four miles away.
